DJ BOBAFATT
Born in Croydon, South London, DJ BobaFatt has been DJing and working in the music industry since the ’90’s.
He was monthly resident on BBC 6 Music for The Huey Morgan Show’s ‘Block Party’ series on Saturday mornings for three years (2022-2025), and currently hosts a fortnightly Friday night show on Soho Radio, one of the station’s highest-rated shows along with the likes of Norman Jay & Ross Allen. He’s had a slot on Soho since 2017, playing a hybrid of hip hop, soul, jazz, d&b, broken beat and more.
His online mixes and DJ sets have seen accolades over the years from FACT Magazine (‘Top 20 Unsung DJs’ poll), BBC 1Xtra (MistaJam's ‘M1X It Up Champion’ 2006), and Mixcloud (‘Top 100 Cloudcasts’ of 2014, and ‘Best Alternative Radio Show’, producing & presenting shows for Rough Trade).
Real name Bobby Bignell, by day he is label manager for First Word Records (‘Worldwide Awards Label of the Year 2019’) working with artists such as Children of Zeus, Kaidi Tatham, Don Leisure, Amanda Whiting & Allysha Joy, as well as heavily with labels CoOp Presents, Extra Soul Perception and previously for Greco-Roman, Dimensions, Total Refreshment Centre, R&S and Apollo Records.
This was after working in numerous record shops for two decades, including senior roles at two flagship London stores; Rough Trade East and HMV Oxford Circus, as well running his own independent stores in Bath (Subway / Groovement) for nearly a decade.
BobaFatt has had features with The Guardian, i-D, Dazed, Noisey (Vice) & WhoSampled, appeared on releases for Death Waltz Records, Roots Manuva's Banana Klan, DJ Yoda and additionally had past radio residencies on NTS, Balamii, Itch FM & Resonance FM, as well as appearances on Rinse FM, Worldwide FM, Chuck D's Rapstation, Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel Radio and podcasts for Hospital Records & The Allergies, to name a few.
He’s performed at venues such as Ministry of Sound, Fabric, Royal Albert Hall, Somerset House, Brixton Academy, Koko, The Roundhouse, Royal Festival Hall, o2 Forum, Electric Brixton, Corsica Studios, Natural History Museum, Village Underground, The Barbican and regularly at The Jazz Cafe in London. Past residencies have included Big Chill, also in London, and the legendary Moles Club in Bath, with regular festival appearances at We Out Here and Hospitality in Croatia, and 1000s of support slots over the years for everyone from Happy Mondays to DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Other random anecdotes include dancing in a video for Chemical Brothers & Noel Gallagher, teaching the Mayor of Wimbledon to scratch, and making Banksy a cup of tea.
One of the UK’s most diverse selectors, blending genres from '80's pop to the coolest underground sounds, with a particular penchant for hip hop & soul, Bobby can always be found bounty-hunting for the perfect beat.
