KEYS
‘There you will find them, tucked away between The Stooges’ Fun House and John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band - KEYS, the band you never knew you needed until they quietly changed your life.’
Across more than two decades, KEYS have become a quietly enduring presence on the Welsh musical landscape. Through seven albums, EPs and numerous singles, the band have developed a distinctive sound that feels both timeless and exploratory - rooted in the melodic wonder of 60s pop, West Coast harmonies and the Motown backbeat, while carrying the raw spirit of post-1968 proto-punk.
Their music draws from a wide spectrum of influences, blending New Wave immediacy, the groove-driven pulse of 80s NYC dance-punk, and the motoric psychedelic drive of 70s European underground rock. The result is a sound that’s melodic yet propulsive - jangling guitars, hypnotic rhythms and sharp songwriting meeting somewhere between classic pop craft and late-night rehearsal room experimentation.
At the centre of KEYS is songwriter and vocalist Matthew Evans, whose songs balance instinctive melody with thoughtful lyrical ideas. Whether written alone at the piano or shaped collectively in the rehearsal room, the band’s process has always been rooted in collaboration and the shared energy of making music together.
That spirit runs through their latest album Acid Communism. Inspired by the ideas of cultural theorist Mark Fisher, the record reflects the band’s fascination with imagination, creativity and collective expression. For KEYS, the title represents two guiding forces - ACID as creative play and experimentation, and COMMUNISM as the strength found in (comm)unity.
Drawing on analogue warmth, lo-fi textures and live energy, KEYS continue to shape music that feels both familiar and forward-looking - transforming fragments of the past into something entirely their own. In an era often defined by individualism, KEYS remain committed to the simple idea that music works best as a shared experience.
KEYS performs at Y Lle Da on Friday 27 March at The Dogs Home. See the full schedule here.
